Castlevania II - Dwelling of Doom

Download (1:21, 320kbps mp3)

Oh, boy. This was made for Crimson's contest, "The Dwelling of Duels." The competition was made in response to some jackass on the Minibosses' message board named Slayer, who insisted that he was the greatest guitarist on the board and everyone sucked.

Castlevania II: BR - New Messiah

Download (4:31, 320kbps mp3)

This is a metal arrangement of the Crystal Castle Stage from Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge for Game Boy, done as a collaboration with my good pal SnappleMan. I did all of the guitars up until 3:15 (except at 1:05) and the Tragic Prince solo at the very end starting at 4:12. The rest was all SnappleMan.

This was also the winning entry of the October 2012 DoD (Free Month). Pretty happy with how this one turned out, thanks to SnappleMan working his magic. This is the updated mix, so be sure to download this if you still have the DoD version!

Chrono Trigger - Crossin' Time

Download (11:15, vbr mp3)

This is the start of something I wanted to be much bigger. As it is, it consists of 7 songs arranged in a medley. My intent was to make a Chrono Trigger medley that sort of told a story as you listened. As I made this during a time when I was really trying to improve my mixing abilities, that's where much of the time I spent on this went to.

Chrono Trigger - Cessation of Mammon

Download (8:50, vbr mp3)

This is an arrangement of Schala's theme from Chrono Trigger, in the style of Zealous Entropy. I had that arrangement in mind a lot when I was writing the arrangement for this piece. This is also is a vocal arrangement, done by the stellar LuIzA. It's not done yet...Needs a few touch-ups and a redone solo. Here's the lyrics:

A pawn tied to strings of time
In ironic confines
Watching as it passes us by
It cries all those tears we deny having
It defies our sense of pride
as it consumes all life

Burned down to ashes
A deceiving bittersweet tyranny
(From) the sky, an endless fall
Hide one's fear by ending one's agony

If I could turn back time
No dream it would fulfill
Hope would still be my only crime
If I could fight back the tides of time
The world'd not be fine
There'd still never be a time of peace
Life is what we feel not what we see
We're blind with the illusion of sight
Collide with walls of sorrow
Time is just disdain in eternal chains
The pain it is to try
Not to allow it to take our fate

Chrono Trigger - Zealous Entropy

Download (10:29, vbr mp3)

This is by far my highest acclaimed arrangement, of Corridors of Time. I remember getting inspiration from part 6 the album, A Pleasant Shade of Grey, by Fates Warning when dinking around in Reason. I had been working on a remastered version in late 2005, but I want to work on my production skills a bit more before releasing that. Winning entry of the September 2004 DoD.

F-Zero - Mute City

Download (2:41, vbr mp3)

Meh. I just tossed this together at the very last minute for August's DoD. Here's what I said in the DoD thread:

"Yeah, I apologize about the quality of my entry. Last Thursday, I
didn't have anything to do before up to Seattle for PAX, so I wanted to
challenge myself to see if I could make an entry before we had to go. I
finished it in a little over 3 hours from scratch. The drums on there
are real time key drumming without any quantization. I'm going to make
it a goal to try and enter every month now, since I have been in every
month since May."

Just download this for fun. It's basically a straight cover. I wanted a challenge to see how fast I could make this from scratch. Thanks to SnappleMan for the uber soundfonted bass :-P

Fighting Golf - Bogus Bogey

Download (3:42, 192kbps mp3)

This one's a smooth jazz arrangement of one of my favorite VG songs ever from Fighting Golf, the Japan course music. Despite not having done any covers in years, I entered the MAGFest 10 DoD. I only spent one day making this before my flight left, and it was on a crappy computer, heh. Special thanks to SnappleMan for processing my sequenced drum/bass tracks.

I'm pretty glad how this one turned out considering the circumstances. Hope you enjoy!

Final Fantasy III Medley

Download (4:19, 192kbps mp3)

This was done for tempsoundsolution's album, Now You're Playing With Powar 8, released December 24, 2008. The high harmony speedy guitars were done by me. Apparently housethegrate also recorded guitar for this, but I can't hear it. The rest was all ShawnPhase.

The first song is the Battle Theme, or track 33 on the NSF. The second song I think is another battle theme, track 38 on the NSF. I performed this twice at MAGFest with TSS. Very intense guitar on this, as with all songs I do with ShawnPhase.

Final Fantasy IV - Lunaric Sonority

Download (7:35, vbr mp3)

I had been planning this arrangement for several months, starting out in Sept 2005 when I was jamming keydrums to "The Lunarians" from FF4. I was getting some cool grooves out of it, and I just envisioned this whole 5/4 arrangement with really heavy guitars. This is my first arrangement featuring my new JCM2000 DSL401 amp. Recorded up in norg's studio.

Final Fantasy IV - Loungin' in the Giant

Download (5:15, vbr mp3)

This was my March DoD entry. It's an arrangement of "Within the Giant." I first came up with the arrangement for this in July of 2004, when I first started using Reason. I was listening to "Summer Madness" by Kool and the Gang, so I got inspired to make this arrangement. This is one of my favorite game songs, as this is my 3rd attempt at arranging it.

This is a bit different from my normal style. I was going for a hip, fusion sound. It's been several months since I recorded this and released it on DoD. I've wanted to wait on releasing the real thing because I wanted to get more familiar with using Cubase (this was my first recording in Cubase).

Final Fantasy VII - It's Hard to Stand on Both Feet!

Download (1:33, 128kbps mp3)

This is pretty much just a straight cover of "It's Hard to Stand on Both Feet!" from Final Fantasy VII, one of my favorites from the soundtrack. This was an unreleased demo, but I like how it turned out. I wasn't trying anything ambitious with this track, that bass line is just really fun to play. I'll probably redo this when I revisit FF7.

Final Fantasy Mystic Quest - Red Cap Assault

Download (3:14, 128kbps mp3)

I just cut the battle section out of my FFMQ medley because it was the only thing from it that I wanted to release at VGMix. This was also my first release at VGMix since I got in that feud with Chaos and left in July 2003. Here's what I said there:

It's the battle theme from Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. This was ranked 2nd place in last month's Dwelling of Duels. The production quality on it is pretty sub-par in comparison to what I've learned after recording it (with much thanks to Ailsean :) ). Pretty muddy. The samples were sequenced in Fruity Loops and the guitar and bass were recorded in Cool Edit Pro with a GT-6 FX processor, And Line6 Bass POD.
Due to the fact that Cool Edit Pro is teh worst multitracking program on the face of the earth, this is all I could squeeze out without CEP crashing everytime I tried to make a change :(K

Original comments from June 2004 DoD medley:

Man, did I have a pain with this one...It was my entry for the May-June 2004 DoD free month. My original intention was to do all of the songs in this medley here, plus the other two battle themes from the soundtrack.
I had something like 90-100 tracks in my Cool Edit Pro session, which inevitably led to CEP crashing every time I tried to export it. I had to manually use Total Recorder to record sections of the wave file that weren't corrupt. It was awful.
There were so many tracks because I overdubbed every track 6 times and panned it around the stereo field. This technique inspired me to write my rhythm guitar tutorial. Anyway, the CEP session got messed up and that's why I never finished this.

Thought you might get a kick out it. Thanks for listening, enjoy.

Killer Instinct Medley

Download (8:44, vbr mp3)

There's a funny story that goes along with this one. After submitting my first DoD in February, I decided to make an entry for the next month, which would be the Fighting Games month. I recorded this all in Sony Acid, and it was the first recording I did on a computer with decent production. This would have been DoD's first megamedley.

As for the funny story...I was checking the Shizz one day as normal, and I look to find a thread posted for March's duel. I had completely forgotten about the deadline, and didn't submit. So I never finished this, like recording a guitar solo for the intro theme. I think it's worth a listen though.

Back in the day before DoD, Ryan8bit had a project called the VGCD, which would just be a full length CD comprised of covers by people in the scene. But hardly anyone was dedicated, so the project died. I finished this crazy 13-14 minute Lufia medley in a weekend.

Madara - Movement 3: One Golt Coin

Download (5:45, 256kbps mp3)

This is the second DoD I've ever done with my brother, housethegrate, and the first collaboration we've worked on in over 7 years. On Christmas, about a week before the due date for DoD, we decided we wanted to do something together again, and it was so fitting because this DoD month was "Capcom vs. Konami". The last Madara arrangement we did was for Konami month in May 2005. This was a MAGFest DoD, so we knew it had to be rockin, which is why we skipped Movement 2.

Our original plan back in 2005 was to release several "movements" (medleys) of the soundtrack, and we're now deciding to follow through with the rest of them. This one's got a heavy arabian theme, as the first 3 songs are really arabian sounding. The title was inspired by a line from a character out in the desert in King's Quest V. Most of the solos were written by house. Here's a list of the original NSF tracks:

0:00 - Track 9
1:29 - Track 12
2:39 - Track 18
3:14 - Track 14
4:13 - Track 21

Madara - Movement 1

Download (6:25, vbr mp3)

This is an arrangement I did in collaboration with my brother, housethegrate, for the May DoD, Konami month. We divided up the guitar tracks between us, while house did most of everything else. Our plan is to release a 30 minute megamedley of the entire game's soundtrack. We have the song order all figured out. That's why this was called "Movement 1", although it wasn't intended to be made into movements. We just didn't finish in time for DoD.

Just a hard rock cover of "The Parasprinter". This is the remastered version that I released on VGMix. The mixing on the DoD version was awful, but still got 1st. I'd say this is my first decently produced song. It's also the only song I submitted to OCRemix.

Secret of Mana - Winter Madness

Download (5:26, vbr mp3)

I did this for the May '07 DoD Fire vs. Ice month, as a collaboration with my good friend, Zoast. He did the drums, among a few other tracks, all of which just turned out great. The arrangement is of two songs from Secret of Mana -- "Eight Ringing Bells" and "A Wish", both songs from ice areas in the game.

The arrangement itself is pretty laid back, and you won't find much in the heavy metal department. I chose the title for this in tribute to one of my all time favorite instrumental songs by Kool and the Gang: Summer Madness. I feel this is one of my greatest accomplishments to date and I hope you'll check it out!

Secret of Mana - Rose of Solemn

Download (8:24, vbr mp3)

This is one of my best arrangements, I believe. I'm glad with how it turned out, with the exception of the poorly mixed distorted guitars in the later heavy section. This song needed an epic feeling, since it's such a great melody and only a little over a minute long. I wanted something really synthy and ambient but still rockin'. Hope you enjoy. Winning entry of October 2005 DoD.

This is the first part of what is supposed to be a Sorcerian medley (PC version). If you haven't checked this soundtrack out, grab it somewhere. It's great. This arrangement is of the "Cursed Oasis".

And trust me when I say it's still very rough. I had to resort to using Guitar Rig 2 for my tracks because I couldn't get the time for recording my amp (the rhythm guitars suck!). And yes, sorry for how short it is...It's all I had been able to accomplish for DoD in time.

StarCraft - ProgCraft

The theme for DoD was PC games, so being a huge fan and regular player of StarCraft, I couldn't resist the opportunity to arrange a song from the soundtrack. Street Fighter II - Eye of the Tiger

Download (2:56, vbr mp3)

This is an arrangement I will never finish, because it's so dated, I was learning how to use Reason and Drums From Hell, Vegas, and it's just a cover looped 4 times with a couple different solos. Here's what I said at VGMix:

Well, I wanted to leave something I did for people to listen to while I go on vacation for a couple weeks.
This is something I've been working on For a month or so on and off. Really all I need to do is record two more solos, and write one of them, work on the mixing a bit, add the room-mic samples for all the drum hits, tweak the reverb a bit on the guitars, compress the bass a bit more, maybe use a different sample for the strings, re-record a few guitar parts, and then EQ the final mix.
The sequenced tracks, drums and strings, were done in Reason. The drum samples are Drums From Hell, and the strings are off a crappy soundfont from HammerSound (I need to use Reason's factory samples). The bass was recorded with a Line6 bass POD, the guitar was recorded with a Boss GT-6, and the multitracking program used for recording is Vegas 4.0. I also used Waves plugins for effects.
Lots of time for feedback while I'm gone. Thanks.

Super Mario 64 - Sonic Depths

Download (4:27, vbr mp3)

An entry for the July 2005 Dwelling of Duels "Super Mario Brothers" Theme. The Story:

This arrangement of Dire Dire Docks was sort of an accident. Ashane, Crimson, and norg were tampering around with Skype one night discussing the July month and the fact that nobody planned on entering anything. Oddly enough, Ashane and norg were both jamming away at Dire Dire Docks on separate instruments at the same time for no apparent reason. The end result? A collaboration to rock the docks, so to speak. We place blame for this song, in its entirity, solely on the shoulders of our lost brother Crimson.

Ashane did electric lead and rhythm guitars, as well as keeping norg from getting lazy in the mixing process. norg did other stuff.

This is an updated version from the DoD release. There are a couple of updated drum fills, the mix is slightly updated, instruments get their day in the sun, norg fixed his acoustic guitar part to be more accurate, and overall this version is sonically superior to that of the original entry.

We hope you enjoy listening to this piece as much as we enjoyed making it.
